In this article, you will learn how to create factory-ready Tech Packs, with the help of your peers, to ensure that your Manufacturer has a clear understanding of your designs.

Why Create a Tech Pack?

A Tech Pack is an essential tool used by fashion designers and manufacturers to communicate their production specifications. Some of the benefits of creating a Tech Pack include:

1. Clarity and accuracy: A Tech Pack provides a clear and detailed outline of the garment design, including measurements, materials, construction details, and other specifications. This helps to eliminate errors and misunderstandings during the production process.

2. Staying organized: Manage all of your Style information in one place including Sketches, Bill of Materials, Construction Details, and Specs.

3. Improved communication: A Tech Pack facilitates communication between designers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders, ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

4. Time-saving: A well-prepared Tech Pack can save time and reduce production costs by streamlining the production process.

5. Quality assurance: By including detailed specifications and technical drawings, a Tech Pack ensures that the final product meets the designer's vision and quality standards.

6. Consistency: A Tech Pack helps to ensure consistency in production, even when multiple batches or runs are produced.

What Goes Into a Tech Pack?

In this section, we will review the four key components of the Tech Pack you can create using UpStyled Fashion. While these four sections serve as the industry standard, you are free to add additional information if you’d like.

1. Sketches: Upload any flat sketches you have made to showcase the silhouette, fit, and design details of your garment, such as neckline, hemline, pockets, and closures. This image will appear at the very top of your finished Tech Pack, serving as a title page for the rest of the content.

2. Bill of Materials (BOM): A detailed list of all the materials and components required to produce a garment, including fabrics, trims, hardware, and labels. The purpose of including a BOM in a Tech Pack is to ensure that all stakeholders involved in the production process have a clear understanding of the materials needed for the garment.

To fill out your BOM on UpStyled Fashion, start by adding a “Part”. This should include an image of the fabric or trim that you’re trying to store.

Each time you add a new part, a row in the data table will appear. Fill out the necessary information (most of the information can be found on the fabric/trims’ website) so you can stay organized during your production process.

3. Construction Details: Start by uploading another image of your flat sketch. It can be the same image that you included in your Sketches section or a more zoomed-in, detailed depiction of a specific area of your garment (i.e. sleeve).

After you’ve added a sketch, use our color-coded annotation tools to begin marking your construction details. Each time you add a new annotation, a new row will appear. To add an additional column, click on the “+” to the right of the Description column.

The construction page of a Tech Pack guides the sewing process, providing visual instructions with call-outs for garment construction details such as seams, zippers, buttons, and embroidery, using technical sketches or photos.

The description column in the table refers to sewing actions such as topstitching on a collar and guiding the seamstress in joining different parts of the garment with needle and thread or adhesive.

4. Specs: Garment Measurement Specs provide the measurements for all aspects of the garment, including length, width, and height, ensuring that the finished garment is the correct size. By providing detailed measurements, Garment Measurement Specs help to ensure consistency in the sizing of the garment, even when produced in multiple batches or runs.

To begin the Specs section of your Tech Pack, start by uploading another sketch image of your garment. We recommend uploading images of both the front and back sketches if possible.

Then, use our color-coded annotation tools to illustrate the exact measurements of specific areas of your garments, otherwise known as the Point of Measure (POM). These measurements can include Body Length, Hemline, Sleeve Length, Chest Width, Hem Width, Inseam, Neckline, etc.

After you’ve established your Point of Measure, fill in the table to tell your Manufacturer the exact measurements required for each size in a full-size run. Garment Measurement Specs provide a clear and concise way to communicate the sizing and proportions of the garment to all stakeholders involved in the production process.
